Stage 2: Roncevalles to Zubiri

Slept OK in the Albergue, which was like a giant coed dorm, last night. There were three floors with hundreds of cubicles. It felt like something out of a science-fiction movie. I had earplugs and an eye mask. I got into my little sleeping sack and hoped for the best. No problem falling asleep. I was exhausted. I woke up early Probably due to jet lag. I closed my eyes and imagined I was riding my bike in west Marin. A few times there was the sound of rhythmic heavy breathing but no horrible snoring. I got a bit more sleep until the exodus began.

I got on the road alone at just after 7 a.m. I walked alone for the first five miles or so. Very contemplative.

I thought about acceptance. Sometimes I have a hard time accepting what life gives me. I am not promising to be more accepting; but at least I am thinking about it.

A little bit about walking sticks: I am now a huge fan. You become a quadruped. It takes pressure off your legs. Your upper body gets exercise and shares the load.

My theme for today is que sera sera. Everyone is worried that there is not enough lodging for all the pilgrims in today’s destination - Zubiri. For good reason. There is a buzz around this year’s Camino-that it is the biggest ever because of post Covid travel.

I decided not to worry. Que sera sera. If I needed to go to the next town, Pamplona, so be it. I even sang part of the song with Michelle from Florida this morning at breakfast.

There is a saying: The Camino will provide. Do I really believe it? No. But…

After about five miles today I found and walked with my Italian friends. Today was a lot easier. Shorter and flatter. Now my right big toe is acting up. Time for the Vaseline and lambs wool. I will survive.

So, we reached Zubiri. I doubted we would find lodging. You could see all the no vacancy signs all over. I was ready to book something in Pamplona and taxi there. Graziella walked into an Albergue on the main road and sweet talked the clerk into putting us up. The Camino provided.

I had a nice shower. I am laying around while writing this. Nice Spanish dinner including red wine for $16 euros. Early night. Getting ready for the next stage to Pamplona.
