Stage 15 Castrojeriz to Fromista (Poblacion de Campos)
17 mile walk today. I felt much better after the walk than yesterday. A retired fireman from Buffalo New York named Jim helped me with my right foot yesterday. He gave me some special anabiotic cream. Then I covered it with a special Band-Aid. It felt better than it has been over a week. i'm still losing two toenails. despite that, I'm able to walk fine.
today I walked with Michele, Lea, Justin and Sean from Limerick. We had a lot of fun. Michele often comes up with ideas on how the Camino could be improved or business ideas for the Camino.
so, today we spent hours discussing how the Camino would be if it were run by Americans. The theme of the discussion was how we could improve the Camino/fuck it up. here are some of our ideas:
Sell the Camino passport/credentials. No free Camino. Starbucks and McDonald's everywhere. Massages for sale at every stop. Bike lanes. Tunnels to avoid hills. Hotels with Air conditioning instead of albergues. Billboards all along the route.
We started out today at 6 AM. Justin and I were the same Albergue. we were supposed to meet Michele and Lea near a church at 6 am. I was ready to go at 5:45. Justin FAFed until 5:57. I left him behind. (FAF = fucking around forever When you're supposed to get going). he knew where we were going and was able to catch up with us in a few minutes.
Sean caught up with us and walked with us after a few miles. I hadn't had much chance to talk with Sean one on one until today. He's a delightful 39-year-old man from a small town outside limerick. Sean, Michele and I talked and laughed all day. it was a whimsical, non-serious day.
We were all desperately hungry for breakfast. Ww walked through several towns. None of them had a café open. We didn't find a café open until we were only 3 miles from my destination. that point we had already walked 20 km. We had coffee and the most delicious sandwiches made with a chorizo omelette.
after our breakfast, we walked another three or 4 miles to Fromista. Michele had a hotel room booked there. Justin and Sean got in line for a room at the municipal Albergue. there was a festival going on.
Lea and I continued on a couple of more miles to the next town. We had a reservation at a hotel in Poblacion de Campos.
We checked in. The hospitalero handed us each a cold glass of sangria. Refreshing.
The Spanish people are very eco-conscious. often the lights turn out automatically unless there is motion in the room. The problem is that the light keeps going off on me in the bathroom. I find myself sitting there clapping my hands.
